Buildings & Structures a Model Train Layout

One of the most important things you need to have if you wish to have a model train installation, is decent buildings and structures. If they look cheap, then the people looking at it will think to themselves: ‘look at how cheap this thing looks like’. You can never go wrong if you buy them at the hobby store. Actually, it all depends what you want to do with your set. If it’s a gift you are making for a child then they probably won’t even care about the buildings etc. as long as they can play with the train. On the other hand if you want to show it off, you’d be better off paying a little more.

Another point that needs consideration that not many modelers take in to account is what kind of ‘city’ are you building and what year is it? A 1930 dodge wouldn’t be at its place in a futuristic set. Use your judgment to make it as accurate as possible. So are you ready to build your dream model railroad?

To be honest if you want to be successful in your model train set, you need 5 things. You know some things are just not the same if they are not there. For example a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is not as good if you have no jelly. I am not just saying that you need it but it’s just that throughout history, this has proven to be a successful way of doing it. Evidently the train, the tracks etc is the thing that’s a given. I’m talking about the details of it all. In any sector or activity that is designed for customers, the thing that gets the most publicity or sales is the one thing that will make people go AWWWWW! (Not as in the sweet sense but more as an astonishing sense!)

Every person is different so every opinion counts so instead of making a top five I will say that there are five number one’s:
1. A Train Station. Well if you are going to build a model railroad then you automatically need a train but these trains need to pick up passengers at the train station. It’s just a logic thing to put there. This is where everything starts when the table is ready, so get one or two but you need one. There can be two, but you should concentrate on one and start from there.
1. People or animals. Well what do you get if you have no one anywhere or nothing but stillness. If the models didn’t have a person then nothing could run ( I mean a train has to be driven no?)
1. You need cars. First of all if there are passengers waiting for the train then it means that people were driven there. I mean you can’t walk with your entire luggage, which would be crazy!
1. You also need lights. If you don’t have any lights, you won’t be able to alert the people when the train is crossing a road.
1. The other stuff. Before everything is started, you should put trees, river, mountains etc. This is vital too because this will dictate the look of your model rail track.

So how much fun will you have building your dream railway train model? Have fun and try not to play too much, let your kids have fun too.
