Building Model Train Tables

When it comes to building your own railway track/train (miniature that is), you will need to start with one essential thing: a table to lye everything on it. There is just one problem if you use just a regular table (actually there is more than one). For starters, where in the world will all those cables for electricity go through? Also when you build your city, how will you get to the remote areas that need decorating? You also have to think of where you’re going to put it. Be a man and build your own table this way everyone will be happy!

How do you build such a table? Don’t worry even Homer Simpson could accomplish this with ease. You just have to do two sawhorses. Then buy plywood, place it over your two sawhorses and voila! It won’t cost you an arm and a leg either. You can worry about esthetics later. Now the downside is that it won’t be as solid as the real thing.

Are you ready to do your tool man? So the whole idea of being the mayor of your own created city excites you? So let’s start with one of the most common object in every house, a table. Since this is going to be your creation, you do what you want but usually it’s better to have 4 legs for support. It doesn’t matter if your top is made out of wood or aluminum or steel, it yours. The standard height for a table reaches 28”. If you want it higher, make it higher (or lower if it fits your needs better). So will your top be circular, square or rectangular? Again the choice is yours.

Consider how much space you have in your house. If your table takes up too much space, you won’t even be able to enjoy your train set.

But a train track model is nothing without an apron. You know the thing that goes on the edge. There are plain ones and there are the tops of the lines one that has drawers. How cool is that? It’s not only cool it’s also practical. You sometimes a tree or a train station will make a difference. But some did try the experience and they will tell you that it’s more of a nuisance if need to make repairs to it because it will only be in your way.

When all the smoke is clear, one of the last and most crucial part of the project is the supplies. Don’t make things complicated. A hammer, some glue and a couple (or lots) of screws and a screwdriver is all you need to do your project. Again a screw is always better than a nail to hold the table on.

Finally, if you want to jump over the hassle of having to order the wood, taking extra precautions because you don’t want to mess it up, hunt for a table at a garage sale. Plus you know that people want to get rid of their job when they sell it so you usually get a good deal. Believe me, when people see the great job you did on your model scale of a city with trains and everything, they won’t care about the table.
